I believe therapy is a lighthouse in the storm as it provides GUIDANCE in one’s life. The most common response I get from the clients is “I don’t know why this is happening to me.” I’ve encountered many clients confused about their problems, not knowing where to start or what they want from the therapy sessions. It is the role of a therapist to work together with the client to explore and investigate the root of the problem by assessing and organizing their thoughts to capture a complete understanding of the problem. By having a comprehensive understanding of the problem, they are able to set a realistic therapeutic expectation. Therapy will guide and lead them safely to the land when they can’t see the path in the storm.
To be successful with the treatment goal, I believe that the assessment is a critical kick-off process because it is easy to get lost in the middle of the treatment if one didn’t receive the appropriate assessment. I utilize art-based assessments as well as other psychological evaluations and assessments. Due to unfamiliarity with art-based assessments, some have questioned its validity and reliability. Widely practiced by qualified professionals, they are safe and effective methods based on empirical research derived from quantitative evidence. I have found art-based assessments are more effective with clients who do not have ability to assess their symptoms and problems such as children or individuals who are reluctant to verbalize their problems because it promotes self-reflection, self-awareness, and insight and is more motivating and enjoyable.
Many clients come in with worries such as “I can’t draw” because it is common thoughts that art therapist can provide only art therapy. I believe every single client has his/her own uniqueness and it is the role of the therapist to identify one’s characteristics, strengths, and challenges to utilize the most appropriate therapeutic approaches for the individual. I utilize variety of therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Therapies, Narrative Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and, of course, Art Therapy. I also want to say “Don’t worry if you can’t draw.” Art therapy DOES NOT require any specific level of artistic skill or talent. The focus of art therapy is not to create aesthetically pleasing or technically proficient artwork. The focus rather lies on empowering the clients to self-expression and exploration without fear of judgment. It is a powerful therapeutic approach for individuals who may find it challenging to express themselves verbally or prefer non-verbal modes of communication.
Lastly, the statement that I have heard a lot was “I wish there were a magic pill.” I understand the frustration, however, therapy is not a magic pill. It is important to have realistic expectations about therapy and understand that it is a process that requires active participation, effort, and time. Therapy is collaborative. I believe that therapy is a whole-person process involving one’s emotional experiences, intelligence, and interpersonal processes. I see my role as to provide a supportive, nonjudgmental, and empathetic working space for clients to tell their stories and actively engage their own generative thinking processes and problem-solving creativity that may have been too stressed and overwhelmed from everyday life. I approach therapy from the Cognitive Behavioral perspective that by identifying and changing patterns of thought and behavior, a person can begin to change the way they feel. When integrating CBT with other approaches designed specifically for that client, as well as a genuine counseling relationship, the client and I can begin to see a more full picture of the issues that brought the person in, explore arising issues, and begin the process of change.
I lived in Seoul and provided counseling for AHS clients from 2010-2012. I currently reside in Pittsburgh, PA.

I believe every person is an artist in a way, picturing and writing their own stories. In art therapy, there is neither right or wrong ways of making art, nor good or bad artist. I encourage my clients to use art as one of communication methods. Sometimes it’s hard to express oneself in a verbal language and we need some time to understand what’s going on inside us. During the art making process, clients can start to understand themselves, gain new perspectives, gain a sense of mastery and achievement, learn and develop distress tolerance skills, coping skills, organizational skills, and self-soothing skills. In one’s healing journey, art can be used as a safe and strong tool.
