services for children & adolescents

  Family

Most people remember their childhood fondly, with memories of picnics and games and more. What we often don't remember is what it was truly like to be a kid. How did we make sense of the world around us?

Children process their world very differently than adults. As they seek to make sense of their world, they often make leaps of logic and take responsibility for things they shouldn't.  It's why children often act out when their family isn't getting along.

At AHS we realize the importance of supporting kids when they run into challenges, recover from traumatic events or manage difficult transitions. Our professionals work with families, helping parents to understand better how children process information and creating effective strategies to increase the likelihood of success. We also have a certified Sand-Play Therapist who can work directly with a child to work through whatever is troubling them. Play therapy provides an alternative mode of communication when either the person is too young to speak about their trouble or when the event is too traumatic to discuss (it has also been found effective for adults).

AHS professionals work closely with parents and school personnel to support young people in gaining the confidence and skills they need to adjust with change, navigate obstacles, and face new challenges.
